Iranian Official Suggests Possible Withdrawal from Nuclear Treaty Amid Tensions

TEHRAN (AP), Mar 30: An Iranian lawmaker has suggested that Tehran consider withdrawing from the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, intensifying debate over Iran’s nuclear policy following recent tensions. Alaeddin Boroujerdi told Iranian state television that critics question why Iran should continue accepting treaty restrictions, arguing that the country is not pursuing nuclear weapons while still facing military strikes.

The Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty is a landmark international agreement designed to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and requires signatories to forgo nuclear arms and accept inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency to verify compliance. Iran has limited IAEA access in recent years and has not allowed inspections of several enrichment sites that were reportedly struck in June, further heightening concerns over transparency and escalation risks.
