Iranian Missile Strike Damages MQ-9 Reapers, Injures Americans at Kuwait's Ali Al Salem Base - Bloomberg

KUWAIT CITY, May 30: An Iranian missile strike injured several Americans at a Kuwaiti air base, according to a report Saturday, the latest escalation that could further complicate efforts to end the U.S.-Iran war. Falling debris from an intercepted Iranian ballistic missile struck Ali Al Salem Air Base, causing minor injuries to several Americans and seriously damaging two MQ-9 Reaper strike drones, Bloomberg and Stars & Stripes reported. The extent and number of injuries were not immediately available.

Bloomberg said the attack occurred within the last 24 hours. U.S. Central Command did not respond to emailed requests for comment early Saturday. Ali Al Salem Air Base, about 40 miles northwest of Kuwait City, is a major hub for U.S. air operations in the Persian Gulf and hosts American and allied forces. Earlier this week, the U.S. military launched two rounds of what it described as defensive strikes against Iran.

The violence threatens to derail negotiations over extending a ceasefire reached in early April. While both sides have expressed interest in broader peace talks, they remain divided on several key issues, including control of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has repeatedly attacked commercial vessels in the strait, effectively closing a waterway that normally carries about a fifth of the world’s oil trade.

In a social media post U.S. President Donald Trump said he would “make a final determination” on a peace deal during a meeting in the White House Situation Room. However, several media reports indicated that the meeting ended on Friday without a deal being reached. In his post, Trump raised the possibility of lifting a U.S. naval blockade on Iran as part of an impending deal. Several media reports indicated that the United States and Iran were discussing an arrangement under which Washington would lift its blockade of Iranian ports as Iran simultaneously reopened the Strait of Hormuz.
The U.S. military has turned away dozens of ships attempting to enter or leave Iranian ports as part of the blockade, which is aimed at pressuring Tehran to make concessions in the peace talks. Though the conflict has settled into a stalemate in recent weeks, the United States continues to maintain a larger-than-usual military presence across the region. According to the latest Pentagon data, 13 U.S. service members have died, and over 400 have been wounded during the operation, known as Operation Epic Fury. At least 42 U.S. military aircraft — mostly drones — have been lost or damaged since the start of the war, according to a report last week by the Congressional Research Service.
