KUWAIT CITY, Sept 14: US Central Command (CENTCOM) has rejected a claim by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) that a Panama-flagged oil tanker recently struck a naval mine in the Strait of Hormuz, calling the claim false.

CENTCOM said the Panama-flagged El Gaia was struck by an Iranian missile last month, leaving the tanker inoperable. It said Iran struck the vessel again with a drone over the weekend while the tanker was stationary in waters off the coast of Oman.

According to CENTCOM, the tanker is currently being towed by a regional partner.

CENTCOM accused the IRGC of making a false claim as part of what it described as continued efforts to intimidate commercial shipping and impede the movement of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.
