Iranian gunboats fire on tanker in Strait of Hormuz, British military says

TEHRAN, (AP) April 18: Two gunboats belonging to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) opened fire on a commercial tanker transiting the Strait of Hormuz, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).

The British military said the vessel and its crew were safe following the incident, though no details were provided بشأن the tanker’s identity or destination.

The attack comes shortly after Iran announced it was reimposing restrictions on navigation through the crucial shipping lane, a move linked to escalating tensions with the United States Navy. Tehran has cited Washington’s ongoing blockade of Iranian shipping and ports as justification.

Since the outbreak of the seven-week-long conflict, Iran has intermittently blocked or tightly controlled maritime traffic through the strait, allowing passage only to vessels it explicitly authorizes—raising fresh concerns over global energy supplies and maritime security in one of the world’s most vital النفط transit routes.
