BERLIN, April 30: The cast and crew of the Iranian film Roya used the film’s German premiere to draw attention to the plight of ordinary Iranians, urging the international community not to overlook the country’s people amid ongoing political tensions.

The film, directed by Iranian filmmaker Mahnaz Mohammadi, tells the story of a political prisoner enduring harsh conditions inside Tehran’s notorious Evin prison, highlighting themes of trauma, repression, and survival.

Speaking to AFP on Wednesday at a Berlin screening, Mohammadi said the suffering depicted in the film reflects the broader reality faced by many Iranians today.

“The existence of the Iranian people today resembles the unbearable life of Roya,” she said.

Mohammadi, 51, also made stark allegations about the situation inside Iran, claiming that prisoners are executed every four to six hours without due process. She added that during her own imprisonment in Iran, she was forced to witness multiple hangings.

Roya was earlier showcased at the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) in February and is scheduled for release in German cinemas on May 7.

The film’s premiere comes as artists and activists continue to use international platforms to spotlight human rights concerns in Iran, amplifying calls for global awareness and accountability.
