Iranian airlines’ flights to Azerbaijan suspended over US sanctions

TEHRAN, Sept 23: Flights operated by Iranian airlines to Azerbaijan were suspended from September 22 following new US sanctions targeting Iran’s aviation sector, Azerbaijan’s State Civil Aviation Agency said.

The agency advised passengers affected by the suspension to contact the relevant airlines or the ticket sales outlets where their tickets were purchased.

Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) said the decision was taken in response to the latest package of US sanctions against Iran, particularly measures targeting the country’s aviation industry.

The US Treasury announced on September 8 that it had sanctioned 36 entities linked to Iran’s aviation sector and designated 27 Iranian airlines under its sanctions program, citing alleged support for the transport of weapons, personnel and illicit cargo.

The suspension comes amid wider disruptions to Iranian international air services. Turkish Airlines has also suspended flights to Iran until at least March 2027, according to reports, as Washington increases pressure on Iran’s aviation sector.

Note: Azerbaijani media also reported conflicting information on September 22, with Iran Air saying it had not received official notification from Azerbaijan and that its Baku flights were continuing.
