KUWAIT CITY, Jan 16: The Misdemeanor Court has acquitted an Iranian of trying to smuggle medical equipment worth KD 50,000 from Kuwait to Iran. The smuggling incident came to light after the customs officials discovered that the accused exports goods through his company, although the goods are declared as used sanitary equipment, foodstuff, clothes and water air conditions.

When they opened the cartons, the customs officers found 16 cartons of sonar devices, seven sonar screens, a dialysis equipment, eight eyes testing devices, 19 heart resuscitation devices, 11 blood test devices and other medical equipment – around KD 50,000 worth of untaxed equipment.

Defense lawyer, Mohammad Hamza Abbas, asked the court to acquit his client on grounds that he had no criminal intention. He also highlighted the lack of any substantial evidence against his client, considering the discrepancies between the report prepared by the experts panel about the goods and that of the Customs.

Meanwhile, HH the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak has requested to refer two advisers in the Fatwa and Legislation Department to investigation because of their failure to follow up the issue of non-implementation of a number of laws based on a verdict issued by the Court of First Instance as a result of which he as head of government is compelled to pay KD 5,001 compensation to a citizen, reports Al-Qabas daily.

The source noted that the Prime Minister was taken by surprise when the court issued a verdict recently against the government, a report on which was published by the daily. The daily added, the government will challenge the verdict.
