WASHINGTON, Nov 4: US Vice President JD Vance said Wednesday that the war with Iran was the main reason Republicans lost the US midterm elections, arguing that voter anger over the conflict drove many supporters of President Donald Trump to back Democratic candidates.
“The reason we lost is the war,” Vance wrote in a statement posted on the social media platform X.
Vance rejected the argument that the Republican defeat was primarily the result of low voter turnout, saying the election results instead showed that many Americans who supported the Trump-Vance ticket in the 2024 presidential election switched to the Democratic Party in 2026.
“The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026,” he said.
Citing polling data, Vance said voters who abandoned the Republican Party identified ending the war, addressing the cost of living and inflation, putting America first and changing Washington’s relationship with Israel among their major concerns.
The vice president acknowledged that Republicans would face “a lot of infighting and arguing” over the reasons behind the party’s losses.
While conceding that the Republican Party’s economic messaging may also have fallen short, Vance maintained that the Iran war was the central issue behind the electoral defeat.
“Any honest conversation about where we go from here must start there,” Vance said.
Vance’s comments came after Democrats scored major victories in the midterm elections, raising fresh questions about the political consequences of the Iran conflict and the future direction of Trump’s foreign policy.
The election outcome could increase pressure on the Trump administration to reassess its approach to the war with Iran, particularly as voters who previously backed Trump and Vance expressed growing concerns over the conflict, domestic economic pressures and America’s role in overseas wars.
