Iran War Damage to Gulf Allies to Be Recovered From Frozen Iranian Assets

WASHINGTON, Jun 11: US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned on Thursday that any damage caused by Iran to US allies in the Gulf would be compensated using funds taken from Iranian accounts, signaling a tougher economic response alongside ongoing military pressure.

In a post on X, Bessent said Iran would face growing financial consequences for any further escalation in the region.

“The Iranian regime will lose the zero-sum game it is playing,” Bessent wrote.

He added that any damage inflicted on US allies in the Gulf would be paid for with funds extracted from Iranian accounts.

“Any damage it inflicts on our allies in the Gulf will be paid for with funds extracted from Iranian Accounts. Any tolls paid to the Persian Gulf Strait Authority will be offset by funds extracted from their accounts,” Bessent said.

The comments come amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran following recent US military strikes on Iranian targets and growing concerns over the security of Gulf shipping lanes and regional energy infrastructure.

Bessent's remarks suggest the United States is prepared to use economic measures in addition to military action to deter Iran and protect regional allies, while warning Tehran that further attacks could carry significant financial costs.
