TEHRAN, Jul 25: Iran will keep internet restrictions in place until the country's security situation stabilizes, a senior lawmaker said on Saturday, emphasizing that national security remains the government's highest priority.
Mostafa Pourdehghan, a member of Iran's parliamentary Industries and Mines Committee, said expanding access to the global internet remains a long-term goal, but current security concerns outweigh efforts to ease restrictions.
"At the moment, the country's issues are viewed through a security lens, and it is natural that anything that endangers national security will remain subject to restrictions for now," Pourdehghan said.
He noted that lawmakers continue to discuss internet access with government officials, particularly the communications minister, and remain committed to eventually creating a more open online environment.
According to Pourdehghan, authorities will reassess the restrictions once conditions become more stable, arguing that easing controls at the appropriate time would help strengthen national unity and restore public confidence.
The lawmaker also dismissed suggestions that recent cyberattacks on Iran's banking system were linked to internet platform restrictions. He instead argued that virtual private networks (VPNs) and proxy services present security risks because many operate from outside Iran.
