Iran Says US Must Honor MoU as Trump Proposal Seeks Talks and Hormuz Reopening

TEHRAN, Aug 2:  Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said the United States must be compelled to honor the Iran-US memorandum of understanding (MoU), describing the agreement as a key foundation for Tehran’s future foreign relations.

“We must strive to compel the enemy to honor what it signed,” Pezeshkian said in a statement on X, adding that the memorandum would strengthen the security of Iran, the region, and its allies.

Meanwhile, a proposal announced by US President Donald Trump calls for Washington and Tehran to return to negotiations and continue discussions on issues that previously stalled progress toward an agreement, the Associated Press reported, citing a regional official involved in mediation efforts.

According to the report, the proposal includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz, halting attacks across the region, including those by Iranian-backed militias in Iraq against Persian Gulf countries and Jordan, and resuming diplomatic talks.

In return, the United States would end its naval blockade on Iran and allow Tehran to resume oil exports under terms outlined in a tentative ceasefire arrangement, the official said.

No final agreement has been reached yet, but mediation efforts are continuing as regional parties work to reduce tensions and restore stability.
