TEHRAN, Apr 13: A senior Iranian lawmaker has claimed that Tehran agreed to dilute a significant stockpile of enriched uranium as a goodwill measure, but the United States later withdrew from the proposed arrangement.
Ali Nikzad said Iran had consented to dilute around 450 kilograms of enriched uranium under a plan that would have involved a consortium operating inside Iran with participation from the United States and Saudi Arabia. He also alleged that Washington proposed establishing a legal framework for the Strait of Hormuz that would include an American role, a suggestion he rejected, saying the US had no place in the Gulf.
Meanwhile, diplomatic activity in Tehran showed signs of normalization as Azerbaijan resumed operations at its embassy with a limited number of staff, including the ambassador. The mission is expected to gradually scale up its activities.
Separately, Spain has also reopened its embassy in Tehran, according to Iranian state media, following earlier plans by Madrid to restore its diplomatic presence in the country.
