TEHRAN, Jul 21: US military strikes disrupted communications between mainland Iran and the islands of Kharg and Qeshm several times, Iran’s Communications Minister Sattar Hashemi said on Tuesday.
Hashemi said fiber-optic infrastructure in parts of southern Iran was damaged in the attacks, forcing authorities to temporarily rely on radio and satellite connections to maintain communications.
He added that repair work was needed to restore the damaged fiber-optic networks, saying officials were working to bring disrupted services back online as quickly as possible.
Meanwhile, Iran’s conservative Ettelaat newspaper warned that a prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb could ultimately harm Iran despite providing short-term strategic leverage.
The newspaper said simultaneous disruptions to the two key waterways could create economic pressure on global markets, but a crisis lasting several months could worsen Iran’s own economic situation and increase the likelihood of wider intervention by major powers.
The comments come amid heightened regional tensions, with shipping routes and critical infrastructure facing growing risks as the conflict continues to escalate.
