TEHRAN, June 14: Iran’s banking authorities said a limited cyberattack targeting shared communications infrastructure caused temporary disruptions at four major banks, according to the country’s Coordination Council of Banks.
The council confirmed that the affected institutions included Bank Melli Iran, Bank Tejarat, Bank Saderat Iran, and the Export Development Bank of Iran. It said technical teams quickly identified unusual activity and implemented protective measures to contain the impact of the incident.
Officials stressed that there was no evidence of unauthorized access to customer data and confirmed that no financial or personal information was deleted or compromised during the disruption. They added that systems were gradually restored after precautionary measures were taken.
The announcement followed widespread reports on Saturday of banking service disruptions across Iran, with customers experiencing failed card transactions, blocked transfers, and Point of Sale (POS) payment errors. Reports indicated that multiple banks, including Bank Melli, Bank Tejarat, Bank Sepah, Bank Saderat, and Bank Mellat, were affected at varying levels.
Business owners reported significant disruption, with some stating that the majority of bank cards were non-functional for several hours, preventing customers from making purchases. Users also reported difficulties with ATM withdrawals, online transfers, and electronic payments, with POS machines displaying “issuer error” messages.
Some reports suggested that disruptions lasted for several hours in different cities, including Mashhad, affecting daily commercial activity and electronic banking services.
Authorities have not attributed the incident to any specific actor but described it as a limited cyberattack and said investigations are ongoing to assess the scope and origin of the disruption while reinforcing cybersecurity measures across banking systems.
