Iran Says Attacks on Bushehr Nuclear Plant Could Have Regional Consequences

TEHRAN (AP), Apr 4: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned on Saturday that any radioactive fallout from further attacks on the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant could have “disastrous repercussions” for regional capitals, while stressing that Tehran itself would not be directly affected.

In a social media post, Araghchi accused Western governments of remaining silent over what he described as repeated strikes or threats against the facility, located about 750 kilometers south of Tehran. He said the lack of response raised serious concerns about regional safety and nuclear security.

The Bushehr plant operates using low-enriched uranium supplied by Russia and is staffed in part by Russian technicians. It generates around 1,000 megawatts of electricity, supplying power to hundreds of thousands of homes, though it represents only a small share of Iran’s overall energy production.

The remarks come amid heightened tensions surrounding critical infrastructure in the region, with growing international concern over the safety of nuclear facilities in conflict zones.
