TEHRAN, Apr 11: Iran continues to maintain a significant missile arsenal and concealed launch capabilities despite recent strikes by the United States and Israel, according to US intelligence assessments reported by The Wall Street Journal.
Officials say Tehran still possesses more than 1,000 medium-range ballistic missiles, down from an estimated pre-conflict stockpile of around 2,500. While the strikes have substantially degraded Iran’s missile force, it remains operational and capable of launching attacks.
US officials also revealed that more than half of Iran’s missile launchers have been destroyed, damaged, or hidden in underground facilities. However, many of these systems are believed to be recoverable or repairable, particularly those stored in fortified mountain complexes and subterranean bases, allowing Iran to potentially restore portions of its launch capacity.
Meanwhile, concerns persist over maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit route. According to a report by The New York Times, Iran has been unable to locate all the naval mines it deployed in the waterway during recent hostilities.
US officials said the incomplete tracking and limited mine-clearing capabilities have hampered Tehran’s efforts to remove the devices, raising ongoing risks for commercial shipping and delaying the full restoration of safe passage through the strategic corridor.
The dual challenges of Iran’s residual missile strength and unresolved naval mine threats continue to underscore regional security concerns, even amid a fragile pause in hostilities.
