TEHRAN, Nov 6: Iranian authorities are reportedly distributing iodine tablets to communities near nuclear facilities as concerns grow over the possibility of renewed US military action against the country.

The report was first published by The Times, which cited an unnamed Iranian health ministry official as saying that iodine tablets were being distributed as a precaution against potential radiation exposure.

According to the official, Iranian authorities had sought during wartime to distribute the tablets to communities located within a two-to-three-kilometre radius of nuclear facilities. The latest report, however, does not independently establish the full scale of the current distribution programme or identify all the sites involved. The Times

The Times also reported that Iranian authorities and media outlets have been preparing the public for the possibility of a renewed attack, including concern over the heavily fortified Pickaxe Mountain complex near Natanz.

An Iranian political journalist told the newspaper that reporters had recently been briefed about what officials viewed as a serious possibility of a US attack involving nuclear weapons against the site. However, there has been no public confirmation from the US government that a nuclear strike has been ordered or approved.

The underground facility at Pickaxe Mountain is believed to be deeply buried and difficult to destroy using conventional weapons. The exact purpose and contents of the complex remain unclear, with reports noting that international inspectors have not entered the site. The Times

The reported iodine distribution comes amid heightened tensions and renewed speculation over possible US military action against Iranian nuclear and military infrastructure.

Important: Potassium iodide tablets can help protect the thyroid from absorbing radioactive iodine in the event of a radioactive release, but they do not protect against all forms of radiation or radioactive contamination.
