Iran Proposes Hormuz De-escalation, Urges US to Lift Blockade

MOSCOW, Apr 27: Iran has offered to ease its chokehold on the strategic Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the United States ending its blockade, according to regional officials familiar with the proposal, as diplomatic tensions continue to simmer.

The proposal, reportedly conveyed to Washington via Pakistan, does not address Iran’s nuclear program — a key demand for the US in any broader agreement. Officials said the offer is unlikely to gain traction with US President Donald Trump, who has insisted that curbing Tehran’s nuclear ambitions must be part of any deal to secure maritime access and a lasting ceasefire.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Russia on Monday for talks with President Vladimir Putin, describing the visit as an opportunity to coordinate with Moscow on the ongoing conflict involving Israel and the United States.

Araghchi blamed Washington for the collapse of earlier negotiations held in Pakistan, saying “excessive demands” by the US prevented a breakthrough despite progress in talks.

He emphasized that ensuring safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz remains “an important global issue,” as both Iran and the US maintain rival restrictions in the vital oil shipping corridor.

The Strait of Hormuz, a key transit route for global energy supplies, has become a flashpoint in the escalating standoff, with any disruption posing significant risks to international markets and regional stability.
