LONDON, Aug 23: Commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remained sharply reduced over the past 48 hours, with only single-digit numbers of vessels recorded transiting in each direction, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
UKMTO said the continued decline in maritime traffic indicates that Iran is maintaining a strong presence around key shipping routes and keeping pressure on commercial vessels navigating the strategic waterway. The Strait of Hormuz is a vital global energy corridor, making any disruption to shipping through the passage a major concern for international trade and oil markets.
Commercial traffic has also remained subdued through the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, UKMTO said. The reduction follows a July 20 naval blockade against Saudi Arabia by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi group, adding to wider security concerns affecting commercial shipping in the region.
The latest figures highlight the continuing impact of regional tensions on maritime traffic, with vessels operating through some of the world’s most important shipping lanes facing heightened security risks and uncertainty.
