ISLAMABAD, Jun 23: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Pakistan’s Army Chief Gen. Asim Munir emphasized the need to expand bilateral cooperation and strengthen regional security during talks in Islamabad on Tuesday, according to Iran’s official news agency IRNA.

The meeting took place shortly after Pezeshkian arrived in the Pakistani capital for an official visit. The two sides reviewed political, security and defense cooperation and stressed the importance of closer coordination, particularly on security matters.

IRNA said Munir was accompanied by Lt. Gen. Asim Malik, Pakistan’s national security adviser and director general of military intelligence. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Iran’s ambassador to Pakistan, Reza Amiri Moghadam, also attended the meeting.

Pezeshkian was earlier received in Islamabad by Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The visit comes days after Iran and the United States began implementing the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, a Pakistan-mediated framework aimed at ending the war and resolving outstanding disputes through negotiations.

On Sunday, Qatar and Pakistan said in a joint statement following US-Iran talks at Switzerland’s Burgenstock resort that the parties had agreed to establish a “de-confliction cell” involving the US, Iran and Lebanon, facilitated by the two mediators. The mechanism is intended to ensure compliance with the cessation of military operations in Lebanon under the Islamabad Understanding.

Iran and the US announced on June 14 that they had reached a 14-point understanding mediated by Pakistan. The memorandum entered into force on June 18 after being electronically signed by Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump.

The agreement includes provisions related to ending the war, including in Lebanon, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting the US naval blockade imposed on Iran.
