MUSCAT, Jun 29: Iran and Oman held the first meeting of a joint committee on the Strait of Hormuz in Muscat, focusing on issues related to the strategic waterway and its future management.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi said the talks were held during his visit to Oman with Abdulaziz Al-Hinai of the Omani Foreign Ministry.
Gharibabadi said the two sides reviewed current developments concerning the narrow maritime passage and exchanged views on its future administration based on Article 5 of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding and the sovereign rights of coastal states.
The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy shipping routes, has remained a focus of regional security discussions due to its strategic importance for global oil and gas shipments.
