Iran, Oman agree on coordinates for proposed safe shipping route in Strait of Hormuz

MUSCAT, Aug 5: Iran and Oman have agreed on the geographical coordinates of a proposed safe commercial shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Wednesday.

Baghaei said the two countries are reviewing and finalizing a joint statement outlining the key points and agreements reached during the talks. He added that discussions between Tehran and Muscat have been ongoing for the past two months, covering technical, legal, security and environmental aspects of the proposed route.

However, he stressed that the agreement with Oman alone does not guarantee full security for vessels passing through the strategic waterway, saying that tensions and factors contributing to insecurity in the region remain.

Baghaei also said there were no plans for visits by Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf or Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to Pakistan or Qatar, but noted that both countries continue efforts to ease regional tensions and remain in contact with Tehran.
