Iran offers to reopen Strait of Hormuz within seven days if US accepts conditions

NEW YORK, Sept 24: Iran has proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz and resuming nuclear negotiations with the United States within seven days if Washington accepts its conditions, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Thursday.

Araghchi said the proposal was conveyed to the United States through Qatari mediators this week. The proposal draws on a June ceasefire agreement that subsequently collapsed.

“If certain conditions are met, the Strait of Hormuz will be open at the end of seven days, and talks will be restarted,” Araghchi told journalists and think tank experts at a meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

He said Iran was seeking no more than the terms contained in the Islamabad memorandum of understanding, which, according to Araghchi, briefly ended the war launched by the United States and Israel against Iran in February.

“The conditions we have asked the US to meet are nothing new, nothing more than what was already in the Islamabad MOU, which was signed by the US President,” he said.

Araghchi said the seven-day period would begin the day after Washington accepts the proposal.

He added that Tehran was awaiting a response from the United States through the mediators.
