TEHRAN, Apr 23: Iran has announced the execution of another member of the exiled opposition group Mujahedeen-e-Khalq, marking the latest in a series of politically sensitive executions amid heightened regional tensions.
The judiciary’s Mizan news agency identified the executed man as Soltanali Shirzadi Fakhr, alleging he cooperated with Israel’s intelligence agency Mossad. However, authorities did not provide details on when or where he was arrested, nor did they present publicly verifiable evidence to support the accusations.
Iran has repeatedly accused individuals executed during the ongoing period of conflict and unrest of links to Israel. Human rights activists argue that such cases are often handled behind closed doors, citing concerns over coerced confessions, limited legal representation, and lack of transparency in trials.
With this latest execution, the reported number of Mujahedeen-e-Khalq members executed since the start of the conflict has risen to nine, according to opposition-linked sources.
Rights groups estimate that Iran carried out at least 140 executions in early 2026 (January–March) alone, while in 2025, approximately 1,639 people were executed, the highest annual figure recorded since 1989.
