WASHINGTON, Nov 3: The US military destroyed an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) surface-to-air missile launcher on Iran’s Qeshm Island on Monday night after Iranian forces allegedly fired a missile at an American aircraft operating in the Strait of Hormuz, Axios reported, citing a US official.

According to the official, a US fighter jet destroyed the missile launcher in an act of self-defense following the reported missile attack.

The incident marks another escalation in military tensions between Washington and Tehran, particularly around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

Separately, The Wall Street Journal reported that the United States carried out strikes against Qeshm Island on Monday as part of a series of limited military operations against Iranian targets that Washington has reportedly conducted secretly over the past several weeks.

Some US officials described the operations as defensive measures intended to prevent Iran from having the ability to threaten or attack commercial vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz.

The latest reported strike comes amid growing concerns over maritime security in the Gulf region and the safety of international shipping through one of the world's most important energy transit routes.
