Iran Faces Growing Pressure as Britain Backs US Economic Sanctions

LONDON, Aug 25: Britain will continue working with the United States and other partners to increase economic pressure on Iran and has imposed more than 240 sanctions since taking office, Chancellor of the Exchequer John Healey said Tuesday.

Healey said Britain supports US efforts to secure a diplomatic solution with Tehran and welcomed increased pressure on Iran, including through Operation Economic Outcast.

"We will continue to work with partners to protect our interests, take the necessary steps to re-open the Strait and counter Iran's dangerous activity," Healey said in a statement.

Healey called on Iran to end what he described as its destabilizing activity across the region, including in the Strait of Hormuz, and urged Tehran to engage in diplomatic talks "in good faith."

The British position comes amid heightened tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important waterway for global energy and commercial shipping. London has emphasized cooperation with Washington and other allies while continuing to support diplomatic efforts to address tensions with Iran.
