TEHRAN, Jul 28: Iran has warned that it will prevent vessels from passing through the Strait of Hormuz if they are linked to companies or countries that receive compensation from frozen Iranian assets, escalating tensions around one of the world’s most important energy waterways.
A spokesperson for Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters said the country’s armed forces would not allow vessels belonging to entities benefiting from seized Iranian funds to navigate through the strategic strait.
The warning came after US President Donald Trump announced plans to use frozen Iranian assets to compensate shipping vessels damaged during recent tensions. Tehran condemned the move as illegal and warned of consequences.
Iran also said it had blocked an Omani proposal to bring in another country to clear mines from the southern part of the Strait of Hormuz. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Tehran opposed the plan and warned that any European warship approaching the strategic waterway would be considered a “legitimate target.”
Gharibabadi said Iran’s policy is to ensure the Strait of Hormuz does not return to the situation that existed before the conflict, claiming that maintaining the new conditions is part of what Tehran considers its wartime success.
The Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route through which a significant share of the world’s oil supplies passes, remains at the centre of growing regional tensions.
