TEHRAN, Jun 7: An Iranian lawmaker has claimed that Iran receives between $1.5 million and $2 million from each vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz, according to remarks carried by the IRGC-linked Fars News Agency on Sunday.
Mohsen Zanganeh, a member of Iran’s parliamentary Budget and Planning Committee, said the payments are deposited into the state treasury under budget provisions and allocated to designated government expenditures.
According to the report, some transactions are not settled in cash but are instead conducted through Tether, a U.S. dollar-pegged cryptocurrency, or through barter arrangements. The report did not provide further details on the mechanism of the payments or the legal basis for the charges.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most strategically important maritime chokepoints, handling a significant share of global oil and gas shipments.
