TEHRAN, Apr 7: Health authorities in the southern Iranian port city of Bushehr have distributed around 180,000 iodine tablets to residents as part of a radiological emergency preparedness plan, according to a local official.
The deputy for health at Bushehr University of Medical Sciences said the distribution began before the 12-day conflict in June 2025, following a decision by the national crisis management headquarters, as reported by the state-run Young Journalists Club.
Officials said the rollout initially focused on areas surrounding Iran’s only nuclear power plant before being expanded to cover the entire city, with tablets now available through all comprehensive health centers.
Authorities added that the iodine tablets are intended for use in the event of a radiological incident, as they help block the thyroid gland from absorbing harmful radioactive iodine, thereby reducing the risk of thyroid damage.
