Reza Aref and Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf
TEHRAN, Apr 12: Senior Iranian officials have outlined key demands raised during recent negotiations with the United States, including war reparations and recognition of Tehran’s authority over transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s First Vice President Reza Aref said Tehran sought U.S. acknowledgment of its control over the critical waterway, describing it as a “right of the Iranian people.” He also emphasized the pursuit of compensation for damages caused by recent U.S. and Israeli strikes.
“This is our firm commitment to a strong Iran,” Aref said in a social media post.
Meanwhile, Iran’s chief negotiator in the Pakistan talks, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, blamed Washington for the failure to reach an agreement.
Qalibaf said Iran had clearly presented its position and that it was now up to the United States “to decide whether it can gain our trust or not,” without detailing the core sticking points.
However, Iranian officials and state media have indicated that major disagreements centered on Iran’s nuclear program and control over transit through the Strait of Hormuz, accusing the U.S. of overreach during the negotiations.
The talks, held in Islamabad, ended without a breakthrough, leaving key disputes unresolved and raising concerns over further tensions in the region.
