TEHRAN, April 10: Iran has said negotiations with the United States cannot proceed unless key preconditions are met, including the release of its blocked financial assets and a ceasefire in Lebanon.
Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf stated on Friday that two previously agreed measures remain unfulfilled ahead of planned talks in Islamabad.
“Two of the measures mutually agreed upon between the parties have yet to be implemented: a ceasefire in Lebanon and the release of Iran’s blocked assets before the commencement of negotiations,” he said in a post on social media, stressing that both conditions “must be fulfilled before negotiations begin.”
The remarks come just a day before expected high-level talks aimed at easing tensions and potentially ending the ongoing conflict. Ghalibaf is widely expected to lead Iran’s negotiating team, although Tehran has not officially confirmed its delegation.
The demand adds a layer of uncertainty to the upcoming negotiations, as differences remain over key conditions between both sides. Diplomats say the issue of frozen Iranian assets has long been a major sticking point in relations between Tehran and Washington.
The talks in Islamabad are being closely watched as a potential breakthrough moment, but Iran’s latest stance signals that significant hurdles remain before formal negotiations can begin.
