TEHRAN, Aug 1: Iran on Tuesday declared a public holiday over the next two days as temperatures in the Islamic republic reached "unprecedented highs," state media reported. Wednesday and Thursday would be public holidays as temperatures in the Iranian capital soared to 40 degrees Celsius, government spokesman Ali Bahadori-Jahromi said in a statement, citing the measure as an effort to preserve public health. The health ministry advised citizens, particularly the elderly and children, to stay indoors to avoid the sweltering weather conditions, as a global pattern of heat waves scorches large parts of the globe.(KUNA)
