SANAA, Sept 23: Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis said 408 commercial ships transited the strategic Bab al-Mandeb Strait between Sept 11 and 21, according to the group-run Saba news agency on Wednesday.
The Houthis said an average of more than 40 vessels passed through the waterway each day, describing navigation through the strait as proceeding normally and safely. However, the group excluded Saudi vessels from its assurances.
The statement comes after the Houthis seized the strategic Red Sea port city of Mokha from forces aligned with Yemen’s internationally recognized government on Sept 10, expanding their control of the coastline near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
The Bab al-Mandeb is a key maritime chokepoint connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and is an important route for international commercial shipping.
