TEHRAN, Mar 8: Iranian state television announced on Sunday that Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been named his successor.
Mojtaba Khamenei had long been regarded as a potential successor, even prior to the Israeli strike that killed his father at the onset of the war. Despite having never held an elected or official government position, his influence within Iran’s political and religious circles had been widely noted.
The country’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which operates under the authority of the supreme leader, is expected to continue coordinating closely with the new leader as Iran shapes its wartime strategy.
