TEHRAN, June 14: Iran has agreed not to produce or acquire nuclear weapons under a draft memorandum of understanding with the United States, according to Reuters, which cited a senior Iranian official.
The reported draft outlines commitments by Tehran to refrain from developing or obtaining nuclear weapons, marking a significant step in ongoing negotiations between the two countries. The official said further technical discussions are expected in the coming 60 days regarding implementation mechanisms.
Under the proposed arrangement, the United States would reportedly allow Iran to dilute its stockpile of highly enriched uranium within the country, with procedures for handling and verification to be determined later.
The draft also reportedly includes provisions for the easing of U.S. sanctions on Iranian oil exports for a specified period, enabling Tehran to sell oil and access related revenues during that time.
In addition, the agreement is said to include measures to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to all commercial shipping, alongside the lifting of what Iran described as a U.S. naval blockade in the region.
The draft further reportedly proposes the release of approximately $25 billion in frozen Iranian assets held abroad, although implementation details remain subject to further negotiation.
Officials have not independently confirmed the full contents of the draft, and discussions between the two sides are expected to continue as part of broader efforts to reach a comprehensive nuclear agreement.
