DOHA, Jan 10: A popular restaurant chain in Qatar has temporarily suspended all cash payments, announcing that it will now only accept bank card transactions following a significant internal theft.
Poori & Karak, which operates eight branches across the country, including locations at Qatar Sports Club and Al Wakra, revealed that multiple employees were involved in the theft, resulting in what the company described as “significant financial losses” and its largest setback of 2025. The exact amount stolen was not disclosed.
Calling the incident its “largest internal theft of 2025,” the company posted on Instagram that the suspension of cash payments is temporary and will apply across all branches.
The management explained that the theft occurred through cash transactions and that the temporary measure is intended to “protect the company’s assets, enhance transparency, and ensure the integrity of financial operations.” The company also emphasized its confidence in its current staff, appreciating their dedication and ongoing cooperation.
The move reflects a broader trend in the Gulf region, where digital payments are increasingly popular among young people for their convenience, speed, and security. The growing infrastructure for contactless transactions has made card payments a preferred option for many consumers.
