FIFA President Gianni Infantino

ZURICH, Sept 6: FIFA President Gianni Infantino will seek re-election for another term in 2027 despite mounting pressure from several quarters, a FIFA spokesperson confirmed.

“FIFA’s president announced in April that he would stand for re-election in 2027. Nothing has changed. Mr. Infantino will run for re-election,” the spokesperson said.

Infantino declined to comment on his future while attending the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland two days ago, saying he would address the issue at the appropriate time and place.

The FIFA president has come under criticism over plans that were eventually abandoned to sell stakes in major FIFA competitions, including the World Cup, to private investors.

UEFA, which has threatened to boycott FIFA events, is preparing legal action and has called for Infantino to resign.

Infantino, who has led FIFA since 2016, is also facing opposition from other continental confederations, including the Asian Football Confederation and CONCACAF, which represents North and Central America and the Caribbean.
