DALLAS, July 15: FIFA president Gianni Infantino endured an awkward moment during the 2026 World Cup semifinal between France and Spain, receiving a chorus of boos from supporters after he appeared on the stadium screens during Spain’s 2-0 victory.
The Swiss football chief had been present at several matches throughout the tournament, from the group stage to the knockout rounds, but his appearance in the semifinal at the Dallas venue was met with a negative reaction from the crowd.
Television cameras showed Infantino following the game alongside FIFA officials and former Barcelona and Spain star Xavi Hernández. As soon as fans recognized him on the giant screen, whistles and jeers quickly echoed around the stadium.
Despite maintaining a smile, Infantino was unable to win over the spectators. Xavi appeared visibly uncomfortable with the reaction, immediately shifting his focus back to the action on the field and avoiding attention from the crowd.
The FIFA president has recently faced criticism over several issues, including his proposal to expand the World Cup to 64 teams in future editions. He has also come under scrutiny after the red card issued to US player Folarin Balogun was withdrawn following reported involvement from US President Donald Trump.
