HYDERABAD, Jan 27, (Agencies): India’s Tanmay Agarwal sets new records, becomes fastest to score 300 runs in first-class cricket at the NexGen Cricket Ground in Hyderabad in just 147 balls during the Ranji Trophy match between Hyderabad and Arunachal Pradesh on Friday, Jan 26.
In a remarkable display of skill and speed, the accomplished batter surpassed South Africa's Marco Marais, who had achieved the feat in 191 balls back in 2017 while playing for Border against Eastern Province.
Agarwal himself hit 366 runs off just 181 balls and was dismissed by Nabam Tempol. Agarwal's 366 was the joint fourth-highest total in the history of Ranji Trophy. This was the fourth-highest score registered by a batter in the history of the tournament. He hit 33 fours and 21 sixes.
In his pursuit of this milestone, Agarwal also shattered former India coach Ravi Shastri's 39-year-old record. He raced to his double hundred in just 119 balls, breaking Shastri's previous record of 123 balls set in 1985 against Baroda. Agarwal now holds the record for the fastest double hundred in first-class cricket for India.
The prolific batter further set a new record for the most runs scored by an Indian batter in a single day, eclipsing former opener Virender Sehwag's record of 284 runs against Sri Lanka in 2009.
Agarwal's innings showcased an impressive acceleration in phases, achieving milestones with remarkable speed. He reached his first 50 runs in 49 balls, the next fifty in just 31 balls, and the century in 80 balls. Agarwal then accelerated even further, reaching from 101 to 150 in just 23 balls, followed by the next 50 runs in a mere 16 deliveries. Displaying an extraordinary burst of speed, he reached 300 from 250 in just 12 balls.
Tanmay Agarwal also contributed significantly to a historic opening partnership, adding 449 runs with Rahul Singh -- the second-best in the history of the Ranji Trophy. The highest opening partnership in the Ranji Trophy remains at 464 runs, achieved by Ravi Sehgal and Raman Lamba for Delhi against Himachal Pradesh in the 1994-95 season.
