NEW DELHI, Dec 24: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the BlueBird Block-2 communications satellite for a U.S. firm, marking a major milestone in India’s space programme. The mission was carried out using ISRO’s heavy-lift rocket LVM3-M6 — also known as the Bahubali — from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The launch took place in the early morning and, approximately 15–16 minutes after liftoff, the satellite was placed into a circular low Earth orbit at around 520 km altitude, completing a smooth and precise flight.

Weighing about 6,100 kg, BlueBird Block-2 is the heaviest payload ever launched into low Earth orbit by the LVM3 rocket, surpassing previous records and highlighting the vehicle’s robust lift capability. This successful mission represents the sixth operational flight of LVM3 and the third dedicated commercial launch for the vehicle, reflecting ISRO’s expanding role in global space services

The launch was conducted under a commercial agreement between ISRO’s commercial arm, NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), and U.S.-based AST SpaceMobile. BlueBird Block-2 is part of a global satellite constellation designed to deliver direct-to-mobile connectivity — including 4G and 5G voice, video, text, and data services directly to standard smartphones, without the need for specialised ground equipment. Its large 223 square metre phased-array antenna makes it one of the most advanced communication payloads placed in low orbit.

ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan highlighted that this launch marked the first back-to-back LVM3 missions within 52 days and underscored India’s increasing capability in commercial and international space collaboration. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the mission as a “proud milestone” for India’s space journey, noting that it demonstrates the country’s growing expertise and reinforces its presence in the global space industry.

Overall, the BlueBird Block-2 mission not only sets a new record for payload mass but also signals ISRO’s strengthening position in the competitive global launch market, paving the way for more international partnerships and expanded commercial services from Indian soil.
