India’s Ayodhya Temple Donation Misappropriation Involving Rs 200 Crore Spark Political Storm and Questions Over Accountability

AYODHYA, Jun 15: Allegations of financial irregularities involving donations collected at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya have triggered a major political controversy, with opposition parties demanding an independent investigation and accountability from those managing one of India’s most politically and religiously significant institutions.

The controversy erupted after claims of alleged misappropriation of temple donations surfaced, with opposition parties accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of failing to ensure transparency in the management of funds linked to the temple project. The allegations have transformed what began as a dispute over donation collections into a wider debate over oversight, accountability and public trust.

The Ram Temple, built after decades of political and legal battles over the Ayodhya dispute, has been one of the BJP’s most important ideological projects. The allegations have therefore carried political significance far beyond the question of alleged financial misconduct.

Opposition demands investigation
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav attacked the Uttar Pradesh government’s decision to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine the allegations, saying the issue reflected wider concerns over governance.

“Unfortunately, the BJP rule [in Uttar Pradesh] is corrupt — otherwise, IITs would have been set up instead of SITs,” Yadav said in a post on X.

The Samajwadi Party has claimed it was among the first political groups to raise concerns over alleged irregularities involving public donations received for the temple.

Yadav also said authorities should be assisted in identifying those responsible, suggesting that those allegedly involved were not difficult to locate.

Congress calls allegations “robbery of faith”
The Congress party has also intensified criticism, saying any misuse of donations connected to the Ram Temple would amount to a betrayal of millions of devotees.

Referring to media reports, including claims published by Dainik Bhaskar that alleged losses could amount to around Rs 200 crore, the Congress described the accusations as a “robbery of faith.”

“The faith of millions of devotees is tied to the Ram Temple. People from BJP and RSS have hurt their faith through this donation theft,” the party said in a post on X.

The claims have not been proven through any final investigation, and the temple trust has not been found guilty of wrongdoing.

Questions over trust structure and oversight
Critics have questioned the independence and functioning of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra trust, which was established following the Supreme Court’s 2019 verdict clearing the way for temple construction.

The BJP has maintained that the temple was built under an independent trust created in accordance with the court’s directions. However, opposition parties argue that the government’s involvement in establishing the trust and the political importance attached to the project require greater transparency.

Critics have pointed out that several trust members were nominated after the government announced the formation of the body in Parliament.

The trust has maintained that allegations should be investigated through proper channels and that it does not directly manage every aspect of daily temple operations.

Calls for wider probe
AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh has demanded a broader investigation into the allegations, arguing that the trust’s formation and government involvement require accountability.

Singh has also raised questions over claims involving temple employees and previous land transactions connected to the trust, while calling for a review of the current management structure.

No official investigation has so far confirmed the allegations of widespread financial wrongdoing.

Political impact ahead of Uttar Pradesh elections
The controversy has emerged at a politically sensitive time, with Uttar Pradesh scheduled for assembly elections in 2027.

The BJP has historically drawn significant political support from the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, presenting the temple construction as a fulfilment of a long-standing cultural and religious aspiration among supporters.

Opposition parties are now attempting to turn the allegations into a broader campaign issue, arguing that any misuse of temple donations would represent a breach of public confidence.

In Ayodhya, Congress workers have already begun raising the issue publicly, including through political posters highlighting the allegations and demanding accountability.

Former Hindutva figures voice criticism
The controversy has also brought renewed attention to former BJP leader Vinay Katiyar, a prominent figure in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement and founder of the Bajrang Dal.

Reacting to the allegations, Katiyar told reporters that those involved were “thieves,” while criticising the handling of the temple project.

His comments have attracted attention because of his historical role in the Ayodhya movement and his past influence within Uttar Pradesh’s Hindutva politics.

Katiyar has previously expressed dissatisfaction over being sidelined from the temple construction process and the political narrative surrounding it.

Transparency remains central issue
The allegations surrounding the Ram Temple donations have created a difficult political challenge because the project represents both a religious landmark and a major political symbol.

For millions of devotees who contributed financially, questions over donation management are not merely administrative but involve issues of trust and accountability.

The temple trust and authorities now face pressure to provide clarity, while opposition parties are demanding a transparent investigation into every allegation.

Until an official inquiry reaches conclusions, the claims remain allegations. However, the controversy has already become a significant political issue, raising broader questions about transparency in institutions built around public faith and large-scale donations.
