Indian Youth Uprising Delivers Result: India’s Education Minister Resigns

NEW DELHI, Jul 25: India’s Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has resigned following a month-long student protest movement demanding accountability over exam irregularities and alleged NEET paper leaks.

Pradhan submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday and announced the decision on social media, hours before a scheduled third round of talks between the government and the student-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).

The minister’s resignation was the central demand of protesters who had been staging demonstrations at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar for more than a month. Talks between the CJP and the government had stalled over the issue, with protesters insisting there could be no further discussions unless Pradhan was removed.

The government had agreed to address the latter two demands during talks on Friday but had not committed to removing the education minister.

Announcing his resignation, Pradhan said he respected the aspirations and expectations of India’s youth and thanked Prime Minister Modi for allowing him to serve in the government.

“Realising the dreams of India’s young generation has been the moral resolve of our political and social life,” Pradhan said in his message.

He added that the decision was aimed at ensuring students’ futures were protected and preventing the situation around the protests from being exploited by forces that could harm national unity.

News of Pradhan’s resignation sparked celebrations at the protest site in New Delhi, where CJP supporters hailed the move as a victory for the student movement.

“Long Live Student Power,” the group said in a social media post.

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke announced the resignation from the protest stage, saying: “We have done it,” while claiming the government had previously resisted calls for ministers to step down.

The student protests, which began over education-related grievances, have expanded to several cities across India in recent days, drawing support from opposition parties and increasing political pressure on the government.

My young friends, for over four decades, I have dedicated myself to the cause of students, teachers, and educational reform. I have always believed that a robust, inclusive, and visionary education system forms the cornerstone of a strong nation.I deeply respect the aspirations, sentiments, and legitimate expectations of the country's youth. Realising the dreams of India's young generation has been a moral commitment in our political and social lives. I express my gratitude to the Honorable Prime Minister for the opportunity to serve the nation under his visionary leadership.

However, irregularities came to light regarding the NEET-UG examination held on May 3, 2026. Taking immediate cognisance of this, the Government of India handed the investigation over to the CBI, cancelled the exam, and announced a date for a re-examination. Additionally, a decision was made to conduct this exam in CBT (Computer-Based Test) mode starting next year.

Throughout this period, our primary priority was to ensure the smooth conduct of the examination for over 20 lakh students. This was achieved through a 'whole-of-government' approach, involving the Government of India, state governments, and—crucially—district administrations. With the cooperation of students and parents, the examination was successfully concluded on June 21, 2026.

From day one, I took full responsibility and never turned away from the situation. I was determined not to let the potential of any meritorious student be ruined by the 'exam mafia' or to allow any injustice to befall any student.
