NEW DELHI, Jun 8: Customs officials at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, New Delhi, have busted a major narcotics smuggling attempt, seizing 15.38 kg of suspected hydroponic weed (ganja) concealed inside electrical appliances.

Acting on specific intelligence and profiling, officers from the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) intercepted two passengers arriving from Kuala Lumpur on Flight D7-182 on June 7, 2026, after they had cleared the Green Channel.

During inspection, officials found the passengers carrying two brand-new geysers in addition to their checked-in baggage. Suspicious activity and further analysis of mobile phone communications led officers to subject the appliances to X-ray screening, which indicated concealed material inside.

Upon dismantling the geysers, customs officials discovered 145 vacuum-sealed packets hidden within a sophisticated concealment structure. The packets contained a green leafy substance suspected to be hydroponic cannabis.

The total recovery weighed 15.38 kilograms, with an estimated illicit market value of around ₹5.38 crore. The seized narcotics were confiscated under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and both passengers were arrested for further investigation.
