High-Level Diplomatic Engagement

At the leadership level, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and H.H The Amir, Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah have remained in continuous contact, holding two telephonic conversations, including one on March 3.

During these discussions, the Indian Prime Minister condemned attacks on Kuwait’s sovereignty, stressed the importance of secure navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, and underscored the need for sustained diplomatic efforts to ensure regional peace and stability.

The Kuwaiti leadership was also thanked for its support of the Indian community, which numbers approximately 1.05 million, making it the largest expatriate group in the country.

Embassy Measures and Community Support

Since the onset of the crisis, the Indian Embassy has implemented a series of proactive measures:

  • A 24/7 helpline was launched immediately on February 28
  • Dedicated teams have been addressing concerns of Indian nationals, as well as other expatriates and transit travelers
  • Assistance has been extended to individuals traveling through Kuwait to Saudi Arabia, including those moving from Iraq to Saudi Arabia

The envoy commended Kuwait’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs for its professionalism and cooperation in facilitating these efforts.

Travel Arrangements Amid Airspace Closure

With the suspension of commercial flights due to airspace closures, the embassy coordinated with Jazeera Airways and Indian authorities to provide alternative travel solutions.

Starting March 20, special flight operations will be arranged from Al Qassim to six Indian cities—Kochi, Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru. Indian nationals will be transported by road from Kuwait to Al Qaisumah Airport to access these flights.

The ambassador clarified that this arrangement is a practical solution under current constraints and not an endorsement of any particular airline.

Visa Facilitation and Consular Services

The embassy has facilitated more than 1,100 Saudi visas in coordination with the Indian mission in Riyadh and Saudi authorities, enabling continued travel through Saudi airports.

Consular services have also continued uninterrupted, including the sensitive task of repatriating mortal remains. Since February 28, over 17 deceased Indian nationals have been transported back home despite logistical challenges.

Food Supply and Essential Services

Efforts to support food security have included coordination with Kuwait Airways and Lulu Group International to import fresh produce from India.

Several flights carrying vegetables, fruits, and meat have already arrived, with more planned as required. Kuwaiti authorities have also ensured stable supplies of essential services such as water, electricity, and food.

Condolences and Community Contributions

The envoy expressed condolences over casualties resulting from recent attacks in Kuwait, including the loss of military personnel and a civilian child, while wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.

She highlighted the contribution of Indian professionals, particularly in the healthcare sector, who continue to support Kuwait’s medical services during the crisis.

Safety, Visa Extensions, and Ongoing Coordination

Reassuring the community, the embassy confirmed that all Indian nationals in Kuwait are currently safe.

To ease administrative pressures:

  • Visitor visas have been extended by one month
  • Residency and work permits have been extended by three months

The embassy continues to work closely with the Kuwait authorities to address any emerging issues.

India’s Energy and Maritime Status

On the domestic front, India’s energy and port operations remain stable. While LPG supply faces some pressure, crude supply, refinery operations, and fuel availability remain normal.

The embassy is also monitoring Indian seafarers in the region, including 22 crew members aboard a vessel at Mina Al Ahmadi port, who are reported safe and awaiting transfer.

Cultural Message of Resilience

Concluding the briefing, the envoy extended greetings on the occasion of festivals, including Gudi Padwa, Ugadi, Navreh, and Navratri, along with Eid wishes, expressing hope that the festive season would usher in peace and stability.
