NEW DELHI, Jun 12: India's Ministry of External Affairs on Friday summoned US Chargé d'Affaires Jason Meeks and lodged a strong protest over what it described as continuing attacks by US naval forces on commercial vessels carrying Indian mariners in the Gulf of Oman.
According to the ministry, the incidents have resulted in the deaths of three Indian nationals, which it described as a tragic and avoidable loss of life.
During the meeting, Indian officials expressed deep concern over the use of lethal force against civilian shipping, warning that such actions threaten the safety and security of international maritime trade and risk further destabilizing a sensitive region.
The ministry said attacks on commercial vessels are unacceptable and undermine confidence in global shipping routes at a time of heightened regional tensions.
India urged the US diplomat to convey its concerns to Washington and called on US forces operating in the region to take all necessary precautions to prevent civilian casualties and ensure the safety of merchant vessels and their crews.
The development comes amid increased military activity and security concerns in regional waters, including the Gulf of Oman and nearby shipping lanes that are vital to global trade and energy supplies.
