NEW DELHI, July 14: India on Tuesday summoned Iran's deputy chief of mission in New Delhi after an Indian national was killed in an attack on two UAE oil tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz, according to media reports.

India's Ministry of External Affairs took what state broadcaster Doordarshan News described as a "firm diplomatic stance" following the deadly maritime incident. Iranian Deputy Chief of Mission Mohamed Javad Hosseini was summoned by the ministry, local broadcaster NDTV reported.

Earlier in the day, the UAE Ministry of Defense said one crew member was killed and eight others were injured when two UAE-flagged tankers, Mombasa and Al Bahiyah, were struck by Iranian cruise missiles while sailing through Omani territorial waters.

The ministry identified the deceased as an Indian crew member aboard the Mombasa. Among the injured were six Indian nationals and two Ukrainian nationals, with four of the injured reported to be in serious condition.

The attack comes amid escalating regional tensions following a third consecutive day of US strikes on Iranian targets. Washington said the operations were aimed at degrading Iran's military capabilities in and around the Strait of Hormuz.

Meanwhile, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy said the US military had directed two supertankers to use an unauthorized route through the Strait before they were struck and disabled. However, the IRGC did not explain how the vessels were hit or explicitly claim responsibility for the attack.
