NEW DELHI, Jun 11: India said on Thursday that it expects the United States to take note of New Delhi’s protest over alleged attacks on vessels carrying Indian seafarers in regional waters.
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, three vessels were targeted by the US Navy. The ministry said two of the ships were under sanctions imposed by the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), while a third vessel fell into a non-compliant category.
The ministry confirmed that all 20 Indian crew members aboard the commercial vessel MT Jalveer were safe following the incident.
India also highlighted the broader impact on its maritime workforce, stating that 562 Indian seafarers are currently serving aboard Indian-flagged vessels, while more than 18,000 Indian seafarers are working across the Gulf region.
The ministry further reported that 13 Indian-flagged vessels remain stranded in the Strait of Hormuz amid ongoing regional tensions and disruptions to maritime traffic.
New Delhi said it has raised its concerns with Washington and is closely monitoring the safety and welfare of Indian nationals working at sea.
