India Records 743 New COVID-19 Cases and 7 Deaths, Heightening Pandemic Fears

NEW DELHI, Dec 30: India on Saturday reported 743 new COVID-19 infections and seven deaths in the last 24 hours as fear of yet another massive coronavirus spread loomed. The data from the Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare showed that there were 743 new cases, taking the total active cases in the country to 3,997 while seven deaths were also reported due to the virus from different parts of the country.

Total coronavirus cases in India since its outbreak in January 2020 now stood at 4.5 million with an increase of 743 cases in the last 24 hours. With seven more deaths in the last 24 hours, the total death toll due to COVID-19 in the country rose to, 533,358. Southern Indian states of Kerala and Karnataka reported three and two deaths respectively, while Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu reported one death each. Several other states including Delhi, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal have seen a spike in COVID-19 cases and deaths. The development came as India reported several cases of COVID-19 Omicron sub-variant JN.1, which the World Health Organization has labeled as a variant of interest.
