NEW DELHI, Apr 23: India’s shipping ministry said Thursday it is “worried about Indian seafarers” operating in the Strait of Hormuz after reports that vessels came under fire in the region, though no Indian nationals have been injured.
Mukesh Mangal, Additional Secretary at the Indian Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, said two foreign-flagged vessels that were targeted had 22 Indian sailors on board.
“None of the Indian seafarers have been injured in the firing,” he said.
The ministry also said that at least 2,680 Indian seafarers have been evacuated since the start of the ongoing conflict in the region.
The Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint for global energy shipments, has seen rising tensions in recent weeks, raising concerns over the safety of commercial shipping and crew members passing through the area.
