NEW DELHI, May 13: India and Iran on Wednesday held discussions focusing on bilateral and regional developments, as diplomatic engagements intensify ahead of the upcoming BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi on May 14–15.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Secretary (West) Sibi George received Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on social media platform X that the discussions covered “bilateral and regional issues, including recent developments.”

Iranian sources indicated that Gharibabadi is expected to attend the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in the Indian capital, further strengthening high-level engagement between the two countries within multilateral platforms.

In a parallel development, Iran has confirmed that Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi will also travel to India for the BRICS gathering, underscoring the importance Tehran places on its participation in the expanded grouping that includes both BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

Iranian officials described the upcoming visit as a significant step in strengthening ties with India, noting that both countries maintain close coordination within BRICS and SCO frameworks and are seeking to deepen cooperation on regional and global issues.

The BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi is expected to serve as a key platform for discussions on global governance, geopolitical tensions, and multilateral cooperation, as India continues its chairmanship of the bloc in 2026.

The diplomatic engagement comes amid ongoing regional instability in West Asia, with Iranian officials having held multiple rounds of talks with Indian counterparts in recent months on developments affecting regional security and international peace.
